In 2127, the ETI known by the codename "Jupiter" showed up out of nowhere, killed a bunch of guys in the process of taking control of the FERMI particle accelerator, and "used it" to create a portal to an (then) unknown destination. The scientists were able to replicate the conditions of his passage, resulting in the Anomaly.
